Low-cost Energy Storage Using Repurposed Desalination Salt

Cal Poly Pomona Philanthropic Foundation
Los Angeles County

Two major challenges facing water and energy sectors are tackled simultaneously in this project. The desalination industry is facing environmental and economical challenges associated with concentrate disposal while the need for low-cost energy storage is increasing due to the share of intermittent renewables. In collaboration with Water FX Inc., a local start up company, field demonstration of a novel energy storage device will be performed using repurposed desalination salt as the thermal energy storage medium.
