A Field Trip to Remember

A smiling second grader holds up three large strawberries, out of focus rows of strawberry plants serving as a background behind her.

In 2022 The Ecology Center carried out a robust field trip program. Receiving the SoCal Gas Climate Champions grant made it possible to scholarship field trips for our local schools. One fabulous field trip was with our neighbors from Kinoshita Elementary School. This was their first field trip since the pandemic began. 65 second graders came to The Ecology Center to have a delightful, interactive, and informative experience of Grow, Eat and Make. They learned about seeds and compost in our seed and soil lab, made seed balls they could take with them to plant, and explored the strawberry fields - with lots of opportunities for tasting. The students were delighted and amazed by their hands-on experience - learning about compost and regenerative organic agriculture in their backyard offered a field trip they won’t soon forget.
